It’s the small stuff that makes all the difference.

When it comes to the online world, it’s the small things you do that can be the difference between being safe and being compromised. Have a look below for a quick crash course on online safety, so you know what to look out for and what to do about it.

How to stay safe online

01.

Email links and attachments

How to spot a fake attachment or link

  • If you are not expecting material from the sender, confirm with the sender via IM or separate email that they did send you the information for your consumption.
  • Check the context of the link or attachment. If it comes with very little explanation, it’s most likely a scam.
  • Hover your mouse cursor over a link before clicking. Ensure the link correlates with the attachment and what you were expecting.
  • Check for any spelling errors and bad grammar.
  • Be suspicious of attachments that can run code such as JavaScript (.js) and Office documents with an ‘M’ on the end of the extension – these are macros embedded.
  • Read. Don’t just click.

02.

Spear Phishing

It’s an email or electronics scam targeted towards a specific individual, organisation or business. Although it’s often intended to steal data for malicious purposes, cyber criminals may also intend to install malware or spyware on a user’s computer.

These emails can be disguised as emails from Sappi, a friend, your favourite online store or even your bank!

How does it work?

  • A cyber criminal sends an Office 365 Spear Phishing email, likely from a fake email address.
  • The user is enticed to click on the link or open the attachment which includes a link.
  • The user will then unknowingly enter their credentials on the fake Office 365 page.
  • Credentials get sent back to the cyber criminal.
  • The cyber criminal will access the now-compromised user’s mail and send Spear Phishing emails to all of the compromised user’s contacts. Except only this time it’s coming from a legitimate sender – YOU.

03.

Office 365 features

Let your Office 365 work for you and protect your data.

  • Set up multi-factor authentication (MFA)
  • Stop auto-forwarding for email
  • Share a link of your document and never your document – keep ownership
  • Take the time to allow your IT department to install BitLocker

These are just a few ways you can keep your eyes peeled and stay safe online. However, if you see something suspicious report it to your IT department immediately or report it to phishingreport@sappi.com.
