Cyber safety info that the "old" you didn't know

The “old” you would have succumbed to possible e-mail viruses. Not knowing to be cautious of subject lines that start with [EXT], meaning that they are from untrusted external sources, even if the sender is familiar.

The “old” you would have just clicked on any random link, thinking that you are safe because you think the URL looks correct. Not knowing that URLs can easily be hidden behind fake links.

The “old” you would have done your banking and swopping private information freely on any open Wi-Fi network. Not knowing that this is the breeding ground for any lurking cybercriminals ready to steal your data.

The “old” you would also not have known about checking your browser bar for the padlock icon on the right, or for https at the start of the URL. Not knowing that hackers can create fake sites to trap people into entering their sensitive information and allowing access to their systems.

What the "new" you should know about Wi-Fi hotspots

Of all the Wi-Fi hotspots globally,

of them do not use encryption to protect the network. And it shows.

In the first half of 2018, 8 million records of data theft per day were recorded worldwide, leading to over 3.3 billion compromised data records.

Luckily, the “new” you knows to always report an incident to your local IT department, or to email it to phishingreport@sappi.com
