2018 Sappi Sharing is Daring Awards

Tips

We’ve covered the dangers of phishing, and shown you just how easy it is to get caught out. So, continuing with our Cyber Security Campaign we are going to teach you how to share content wisely on social media, because believe it or not, you can compromise sensitive data with just a simple post, without you even knowing it.

What you should never post:

  • An image of your car with the number plate exposed
  • Your full birth date
  • Home address
  • Your phone number
  • Your location or geotagged photos
  • Your airplane boarding pass
  • Photos of your children and their school

What could happen?

Cyber-criminals can easily use the details you post on your social media accounts to exploit you and gain access to sensitive information. They can also use the information to perform identity theft.

For example, if you post an image of your car online with its number plate clearly visible, a cyber-criminal can easily clone your number plate and use it on one of their vehicles. This means that you will be held responsible for any misdemeanors or fines that these criminals make.

  • Download a password manager.
  • Use a strong password.
  • Be selective with friend requests.
  • Use a Virtual Private Network (VPN).
  • Before clicking on links, make sure the address matches the URL you’re trying to visit.
  • Make sure to log off when you’re done.
  • Make all your social media accounts private.

The Awards Ceremony where we celebrate excellence in the following categories:

  • Gullible’s Travel
  • Fidget Digits
  • Absent
  • Bad-Mouth
  • Oversharing
Gullible's Travel

Gullible’s Travel

Awarded to the person who throws their airplane boarding pass away while at the airport. Doing this allows hackers to scan your pass barcode and obtain sensitive information about you – they can even steal your voyager miles!

Fidget Digits

Fidget Digits

Awarded to the person who posts their cellphone number online, because not only does this open you up to strangers phoning you, but you can also help cyber-criminals gain access to sensitive information.

Absent

Absent

Awarded to the person who shares a photo of their kids’ whereabouts on social media. This gives human traffickers an easy way to find your children and kidnap them.

Bad-Mouth

Bad-Mouth

Awarded to the person who thinks it’s okay to bad-mouth their job or boss on social media. Not only could you end up in hot water, it could also put off future employers.

Oversharing

Oversharing

Awarded to the person who shares inappropriate images of themself on social media. Doing this can ruin your reputation, but also prevent future employers from hiring you.
